To determine his composition, the artist spent several weeks exploring the farmlands in the Sacramento region. With sketchbook in hand, Richardson made many quick sketches of expansive plains, twisting waterways, and distant mountain peaks. Settling on an expressive palette and bold brushworks, these paintings were composed in the studio from the original plein air impressions.
